A rivalry is brewing between Riverview and Springdale students, but this time it’s a race to get on Santa’s nice list.

The school districts are dueling to help the region’s homeless community by collecting small, stuffed stockings to deliver to shelters this holiday season.

“There is no greater gift than understanding the importance of having compassion for those in need,” Riverview English teacher and project coordinator Michelle Walsh said. “The students are learning firsthand the importance of caring for others.”

Sought-out stocking stuffers include body wash, deodorant, toothpaste, nonperishable snacks and paperback books.

The most-needed item requested by shelters is socks.

Collection baskets will sit outside each high school office until Friday.

Efforts are being led by Riverview Student Council and the district’s Students Against Destructive Decisions, along with Springdale High School’s The Future is Mine Club.

The idea for the friendly rivalry stemmed from Springdale High School Principal Andy Leviski, who during last year’s basketball season suggested the collaboration to build “friendlier student sections at our sporting events,” according to Isabella Walsh, a Springdale junior.

“We were set to meet with members of Riverview’s Student Council when schools were forced to go to remote learning in March because of covid-19,” Walsh, 16, said.

“The holiday stocking drive seemed like the perfect project for students, staff and community members in both districts to work on together.”
