Single-lane restrictions along Route 28 extended through December
Single-lane restrictions on Route 28 in O’Hara and Harmar will be extended for at least three more months.
Work that initially was expected to wrap up in mid-September will run through early December.
Motorists should allow extra time for travel, PennDOT announced.
Traveling northbound, restrictions will be in place from 3 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays between the Delafield Avenue exit and just south of the Harmar interchange.
Southbound, restrictions will happen from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays between just north of the Harmar interchange and a half-mile south of the Fox Chapel interchange.
Swank Construction Co. will be paving and doing other construction-related work.
For anyone driving into Pittsburgh on Thursday for the Backyard Brawl football game between Pitt and WVU, the work zone should not be a problem. Traffic restrictions will be cleared two hours before the start of the game.
Similarly, work zones will be cleared before any sporting event in Pittsburgh to relieve traffic tangles.
Work is part of the $15.32 million project to upgrade a 3.5-mile stretch of Route 28.
Construction includes minor road widening of the southbound lanes near the Freeport Road on-ramp.
When complete, southbound Route 28 will have two through lanes and an exit-only off-ramp to Fox Chapel Road.
Single-lane restrictions will occur with crews maintaining at least two lanes of traffic in each direction during peak travel times and at least one lane in each direction during off-peak hours.
Ramp closures will occur as needed, with many taking place overnight.
Work includes reconstruction of the Delafield Avenue ramps, concrete preservation on the Fox Chapel ramps, milling and paving on the RIDC Park ramps and bridge preservation work throughout.
There also are highway lighting upgrades, green stormwater features, new guardrails and rockfall area clean-outs.
The project is expected to be completed at the end of the year.
