Sharpsburg sewer line project will bring minor disruptions for area residents

Sharpsburg has a sewer line project scheduled to begin along Main Street, between 10th and 13th streets, on Dec. 1.

Sharpsburg residents in the area of 10th to 13th streets can expect slight water disruptions when a major sewer line project is scheduled in early December.

Insight Pipe is expected to begin work Dec. 1 along Main Street.

“The sewer line in that area needs to be relined,” Manager Christine DeRunk said.

Cost is about $24,000.

DeRunk said the work is being done in conjunction with a PennDOT project to repair a sinkhole.

The relining will prevent a potential blockage when the sinkhole is filled with a liquid fill.

“If there are cracks in the old Terra Cotta pipe as there are bound to be, then the liquid fill can make its way into the sewer line and cause a blockage,” DeRunk said. “This slip lining is to ensure that there are no cracks through which the liquid fill can enter.”

People are asked to limit water use that includes bathing, laundry and dish-washing.

Impacts to residents are expected to be minimal.

The contractor said odors might be detected but they are not harmful.

The good news for residents is that it is expected to be a one-day job, DeRunk said.
