A popular local road race has been postponed until summer.
The Red Kettle Race 5K, sponsored by the Brackenridge Salvation Army, was scheduled for November but now is pushed back, likely until June.
Dave Bender, captain of the center along Brackenridge Avenue, cited logistics and scheduling issues but said the delay will “provide us with an opportunity to gain more support and traction.”
“Tentatively, we are looking at early June 2023 for the race and February to begin registration,” he said.
The scenic course is a favorite, as it follows a tree-lined path through the residential neighborhood along the river into Tarentum before turning back.
The fourth annual fundraiser is a chance for people to support the Salvation Army’s Allegheny Valley Corps, where educational, food and holiday programs are offered nearly every day.
The 5K in past years has brought in about $5,000, which is added to the group’s holiday Red Kettle campaign proceeds. Those efforts see volunteers collecting coins and cash outside local stores and typically bring in more than $100,000 to fund programs throughout the year for people in need.
This year, the focus of the run will shift to help pay for local children to attend summer camp, Bender said.
“This is going to make a difference in kids’ lives who attend our camp,” he said.
Past Capt. Alex Senak said the race is a great way to bring the community together and raise awareness for the variety of programs offered in Brackenridge.
The facility provides an emergency food bank, a clothing closet, back-to-school supplies and haircuts, holiday gifts, children’s programs, and worship services.
Runners and walkers have been treated to a to-go pancake breakfast in past years.
The event, when scheduled, also will include a 1-mile family fun run.
