St. Joseph High School in Harrison is offering a new scholarship to help families afford a Catholic education as the school seeks to enroll students for the 2021-22 school year.
The St. Joseph Spirit Scholarship is available for next school year’s enrolling freshmen, said Shane Palumbo, director of admissions and public relations.
“We recognize that some families in our area have been hit hard by covid-19, and this scholarship is one way we can keep Catholic education affordable,” she said.
The scholarship, varying between $500 and $2,000, is merit-based on academics, service to one’s school or community, and involvement in school activities and clubs.
Like all scholarships, it is sponsored by the school’s alumni and friends, Palumbo said.
“We will give out as many St. Joseph Spirit Scholarships as we can to students who qualify,” she said.
The school has 160 students in ninth through 12th grades. Unsubsidized tuition is $10,200 for a Catholic family, but the average family pays $6,500, Palumbo said.
Palumbo said 70% of St. Joseph’s families receive financial aid.
“We have scholarships, grants and financial aid available, so no family is turned away for financial circumstances,” she said.
Palumbo said families may qualify for tuition assistance grants, which have generous income guidelines, and for the Bishop’s Education Fund of the Pittsburgh Diocese.
The school is waiving its $50 admission fee for those who apply by Jan. 1.
St. Joseph High School serves students from four counties, 33 parishes and 20 public school districts. It offers free transportation from 12 districts and private transportation from Shaler/Pittsburgh, Butler/Mars, Ford City/Kittanning and Oakmont/Verona/Penn Hills.
