Riverfront Theater Company opens season with ‘If/Then’
The Riverfront Theater Company opens its 2024 season with a dramatic production that is sure to spur the question, “What if?”
The community theater group will present the Pittsburgh premiere of “If/Then,” a stirring and somewhat heart-wrenching show that follows a woman’s two possible life paths.
“My character portrays two different lives based on the choices she made,” said actress Katie Aiello of North Huntingdon, who landed the lead role of Elizabeth.
“I think once the audience catches on to what is happening in the show, they will love it. It’s relatable, funny, charming, a bit sad at times, but hopeful in the end.”
“If/Then” runs March 14-16 and 21-23 at Allegheny RiverTrail Park in Aspinwall. Show times are 8 p.m.
Tickets cost $30 for general admission and $50 for front row VIP, which includes unlimited concessions. They are available at riverfronttheaterco.org.
The 2014 musical is known for its all-star Broadway cast led by Idina Menzel and Anthony Rapp. It was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Score.
Audience members will follow the recently divorced main character, who is restarting her life in New York City with endless possibilities. Advised by friends to launch a new path, the show follows Elizabeth on two roads, one as Liz and one as Beth.
“It showcases the highs and lows of each choice and how one tiny decision can change your life,” said Caitlin Young, Riverfront’s director of community development.
Artistic director Surya Ravindran of Lawrenceville said that “like many others, I’ve been haunted by the lives I haven’t lived and the tapestry of choices and people that led me to the one I have.
“I think the echoes of these ‘what-ifs’ beat a steady tattoo inside all of us, shaping who we are even as they echo the things that will never be.”
Aiello, 38, has been performing in local community theater from a young age. Her most recent credits include “Mamma Mia” at The Theatre Factory and “Local Singles” with Stage Right.
This show marks her debut with Riverfront.
“If/Then” is directed by Olivia Hartle, with choreography by Caitlin Dobronz. Music director is Michael Meketa Sanchez and stage manager is Alex Hagerty.
Ravindran said he wanted to focus this season on shows that explore the concept of “sister lives” and what they mean to everyone. This show in particular, he said, explores the rippling consequences that even the most mundane choices can have.
“Through (Hartle’s) staging and direction, she’s created a production that celebrates the tapestry of choices and relationships that make our lives,” he said. “I’m excited to see how it resonates with our audiences.”
