A program through the Tarentum Area Lions Club to offer story walks in Riverview Memorial Park will kick off May 14.

Two retired Highlands teachers are working to promote literacy in young children, albeit in a park instead of a classroom.

Jody Shumaker and Deb Turner, longtime district teachers, are spearheading a program through the Tarentum Area Lions Club to offer story walks in Riverview Memorial Park.

“Nobody loves a good book, or loves to have a good book read to them, like a child,” Shumaker said.

“With early literacy, the kids start to develop a rich vocabulary of self-expression and reading comprehension even at a young age, which are tools they need to become successful readers and lifelong learners.”

The first story walk, “A Lion’s Tale,” is aimed at preschool children ages 3 to 5, who must be accompanied by a parent/caregiver. It will be 11 a.m. to noon May 14 at the picturesque park along First Avenue.

Participants should meet near the fountain. The cost is $2 per child and includes a copy of the book, a treat bag and beverage.

Registration is required by Tuesday, May 3.

Volunteers from the Lions Club will assist with the walk, each stationed throughout the park to read a page of the book aloud. Children will walk through the path in groups of about five.

The event is limited to 30 children.

Turner said the event will bring together the concepts of literacy, physical activity and time outdoors.

“We also try to promote kindness and caring through the books that we choose,” Turner said. “With these skills, a child can enter into kindergarten with a love of books and a readiness to learn, something that all young children need.”

Register by contacting Shumaker at 724-954-2341.
