A resident and her pet escaped safely when fire broke out at the rear of their home early Sunday in Lower Burrell, according to a fire official.

Firefighters were dispatched about 12:30 a.m. after the fire started on the rear porch of a home in the 2600 block of Leechburg Road, said Brennan Sites, chief of Lower Burrell Fire Company No. 3.

Police attacked the fire using a garden hose until fire units arrived, Sites said. Flames extended to the second floor, but crews were able to get the fire under control in about 15 minutes and contained it to the rear of the home, he said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, Sites said, indicating it was not started intentionally.

In addition to some external damage, the house sustained smoke and water damage but remains livable, he said.

The resident indicated she was making arrangements to temporarily stay elsewhere, Sites said.
