Registration required for Harrison recycling collection event

Advance registration is required for a recycling collection event coming up in Harrison.

The “Too Toxic to Trash” event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 26 at the municipal building, 1 Municipal Drive.

The event is open to anyone — not just Harrison residents — who wants to dispose of hazardous and electronic waste, according to the township’s partner in the event, Environmental Coordination Services and Recycling.

Household hazardous waste that will be accepted includes paint, paint thinner, cleaning products, pesticides, car and household batteries, light bulbs, fluorescent tubes, pool chemicals, oil, anti-freeze and flammables.

Electronic and Freon waste that will be accepted includes televisions, computers and accessories, printers, cellphones, air conditioning units, dehumidifiers, mini fridges, video game consoles and any other electronics with a cord, screen or circuit board.

Items that will not be accepted include explosives, ammunition and radioactive materials; large appliances; pharmaceuticals, syringes and medical waste; fire extinguishers and smoke detectors; devices containing mercury; compressed gas; and tires.

Fees are charged per pound for certain items — 60 cents for CRT televisions and monitors and 40 cents for all other electronics; 65 cents for devices containing Freon; $1.25 for paint; $2 for all other household hazardous waste; and $1.50 for universal waste.

Propane tanks are taken for $8 apiece.
