A portion of the sidwalk at East Fifth Avenue and Corbet Street in Tarentum is closed for safety concerns at the adjacent building.

A portion of an East Fifth Avenue sidewalk in Tarentum is off limits after high winds loosened bricks on the adjacent building.

The sidewalk near the old Rite Aid at Corbet Street is closed to walkers while the building is assessed for damage.

“There were some bricks that came loose from recent high winds, and some came off the top of the building,” borough Manager Dwight Boddorf said.

“We don’t want anyone walking by and more bricks falling.”

The borough fenced off the sidewalk and posted caution signs.

Abundant Joy Church owns the former drug store but doesn’t run programs out of it yet. The space has been vacant since Rite Aid gifted the building to the church several years ago.

High winds whipped through the region on March 25 and 26, downing trees and leaving thousands of properties without power.

Boddorf said the sidewalk will remain closed until safety concerns are addressed and necessary repairs are complete.
