A memorial sits on a bench outside the Brackenridge municipal building for police Chief Justin McIntire on Tuesday, Jan. 3.

The murder of Brackenridge police Chief Justin McIntire and subsequent death of his killer were the culmination of a days-long manhunt that stretched from the Alle-Kiski Valley to Pittsburgh.

This is a timeline of the events as released by Allegheny County Police, the lead investigators in the case:

11:45 a.m. Sunday

A Pennsylvania state trooper on Route 28 sees a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed headed south in the area of Cheswick. The trooper pursues the vehicle but breaks off the chase near the Highland Park Bridge out of fear for the safety of other motorists.

The trooper, however, is able to use the vehicle’s license plate number to identify the car and the likely driver, Aaron L. Swan, 28, of Duquesne. He learns that Swan is wanted for probation violations related to firearms. Area police departments are advised that Swan is wanted and informed of the car he is driving.

11:30 a.m. Monday

A Harrison police officer observes a vehicle fitting the description of Swan’s at a convenience store on Freeport Road in Harrison. Another man is seen with Swan at the time. The Harrison officer tries to stop Swan, but he flees in the car. A police chase ensues but Swan manages to evade police.

A short time later, Swan’s car is found abandoned in Brackenridge. Police see an empty firearm holster on the seat of the car. Area police are advised that Swan could be armed.

3:02 p.m.

Police are advised that two suspicious males are seen in the vicinity of Swan’s car. Police from several local departments, including Brackenridge police Chief Justin McIntire, initiate a search of the area on foot for Swan.

4:15 p.m.

McIntire reports that he sees Swan on Third Avenue in Brackenridge and begins a foot pursuit of Swan.

Moments later, Allegheny County 911 and area police receive reports from residents along Third Avenue that they’ve heard shots fired. More police units arrive in the area and begin a search for Swan and McIntire.

4:29 p.m.

Police searching the area of Third Avenue in Brackenridge find McIntire’s body between two homes. He suffered a gunshot wound to his head. County police report it appears McIntire was ambushed by the shooter. He is pronounced dead at the scene.

A short time later, police from multiple departments encounter Swan along Morgan Street in Brackenridge. He is engaged in a physical altercation with a resident in a driveway. The resident wrestles a gun away from Swan, who then reaches into a bag he is carrying and pulls out another gun. Using the second gun, Swan begins firing at pursuing police.

One of the shots Swan fires strikes Tarentum Officer Jordan Schrecengost in the leg. Swan exchanges gunfire with police but is able to escape on foot.

Approximately 5 p.m.

Residents of Pacific Avenue in Brackenridge report that a man entered their home and took the keys to their car and their cellphones at gunpoint. The man then flees in the car. The residents were not injured. A bulletin to area police is broadcast to be on the lookout for a silver Subaru likely being driven by Swan.

6:22 p.m.

Pittsburgh police spot Swan’s car in the Larimer section of the city and try to pull it over, but Swan again flees and a police pursuit begins.

6:25 p.m.

Swan apparently crashes the stolen car in the Brushton section of Pittsburgh and flees on foot into a wooded area. Police pursue him and attempt to set up a perimeter around the wooded area.

Swan is able to break through the perimeter toward an apartment complex with police in pursuit. He fires at police with what they believe is a fully automatic weapon.

Near the rear of the apartment complex, Swan again fires at police and they return fire, striking Swan. He is pronounced dead at the scene.

At his feet, police say they find a Glock 9 mm pistol with an extended magazine. They say the pistol has been altered to allow it to fire fully automatic.
