Now that Tax Day has arrived, state officials are alerting Pennsylvania residents that the deadline for registering to vote in this year’s municipal primary is April 22.

Acting Secretary of State Kathy Boockvar said the state’s Online Voter Registration (OVR) is the quickest and easiest way to register to vote in the May 21 primary election.

To be eligible to to vote in the primary, residents must register and have been a U.S. citizen and resident of Pennsylvania for at least 30 days before the election.

Throughout most of the state, the primary is open only to registered Republicans and Democrats. But all voters, regardless of affiliation, are eligible to cast ballots in the 41st state Senate district special election to replace former Sen. Don White and the 11th state House district special election to replace former state Rep. Brian Ellis.

Indiana University of Pennsylvania Professor Susan Boser, a Democrat, is running against Republican Joe Pittman, a longtime aide to White in the district that spans northwestern Westmoreland County, a portion of Butler County and all of Indiana and Armstrong counties.

Republican Marci Mustello is running against Democrat Samuel Doctor in the special election for the 11th state House district in Butler County.
