PennDOT plans to replace a bridge on Shady Plain Road in Kiski Township in 2022. A public meeting on the project will be held from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16, at the township building, 1222A Old State Road.

A seven-mile detour is expected to be in place when PennDOT replaces a bridge on Kiski Township’s Shady Plain Road in three years.

Project plans will be on display during meetings April 16 at the township building. The public meeting for residents will be from 6 to 7 p.m. It will follow a meeting for public officials from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.

PennDOT representatives will be available to answer questions. People attending will be able to review and comment on preliminary information about the project’s status, schedule, design and traffic control during construction.

The bridge crosses a tributary to Crooked Creek near Frain and Baker Hollow roads and the Burrell Township line. Work is scheduled for the summer of 2022, said Kurt Kretchman, a project manager with PennDOT.

The existing, 18-foot bridge was built in 1937 and is in poor condition, Kretchman said. It will be replaced with a box culvert.

About 300 cars use Shady Plain Road daily, according to Kretchman. The seven-mile detour is expected to be in place for 10 days while the bridge is being replaced.

The work is expected to cost less than $1 million, Kretchman said.
