Parents-to-be offered 'Birthday' shower in Tarentum
Editor’s Note: This event has been canceled.
First United Presbyterian Church in Tarentum is getting decked out for a baby shower where several moms-to-be will be feted but none of the guests will be acquainted.
The church at 913 Lock St. is hosting the community event to provide baby items to families in need.
“We want to make sure the very first birthday is celebrated and supported, and we invite anyone who is expecting or with a newborn to attend,” said Megs Yunn, founder of the nonprofit Beverly’s Birthdays.
The group provides celebrations for homeless children, and, through its new Itty Bitty Birthday Cheer program, provides baby supplies for new parents in need.
The community baby shower is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday.
The Rev. Phil Beck, pastor at First United, said his congregation believes community matters.
“We are happy to open our space for use, free of charge, to organizations like Beverly’s Birthdays,” Beck said.
“Their vision of providing birthday cheer and critical care items for children experiencing homelessness and families in need fits within our congregational vision of supporting the community, particularly those who are most at risk in our society.”
Attendees at the shower will be gifted a newborn care packages called an Itty Bitty Birthday Cheer Bin that is brimming with diapers, bottles, pacifiers, wipes and a sleeper outfit.
Yunn said the shower is a great way for moms to enjoy an afternoon out, have a nice lunch and connect with local providers who offer pregnancy and family-based resources.
Providers range from those in healthcare to early intervention to local family centers, she said.
Her group hosts up to 25 similar events throughout the region each year.
First United has hosted Beverly’s Birthdays in the past, and Beck said it’s a win-win situation.
“It has always been a great event,” he said. “We provide the space, Beverly’s Birthdays fulfills their vision and mission and those in the community receive valuable assistance and support.”
The luncheon will be indoors. Attendees are welcome to bring their other children and a guest.
