Overnight intermittent traffic stops will take place next week on Route 28 between the Harmar and Fox Chapel exits.
PennDOT will be testing its wrong-way detection system at the off-ramps from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. weekdays.
Vehicles could be stopped for up to 15 minutes at a time.
The $4.8 million safety project is meant to alert drivers that they are heading in the wrong direction on the expressway. It includes installation of sensors, detectors and cameras.
If a driver enters Route 28 in the wrong direction, signs and lights will activate to get a driver’s attention. At the same time, notifications will be sent to PennDOT’s Western Regional Traffic Management Center.
The project is expected to be complete by spring.
The tests will impact traffic near northbound Exit 7 (off-ramp to Delafield Avenue), Exit 8 (off-ramp to Fox Chapel Road/Waterworks Drive/Freeport Road), Exit 11 (off-ramp to Harmar), the left-hand Fox Chapel Road ramp at the Exit 8 interchange and the right-hand Waterworks Drive/Freeport Road ramp at the Exit 8 interchange.
Southbound, testing will happen at Exit 8 (Fox Chapel Road), Exit 9 (off-ramp to Blawnox) and Exit 11 (off-ramp to Harmar/Route 910).
