A Penn Hills man died Wednesday morning after his car smashed through a fence and plunged into a backyard swimming pool in Plum.
The Allegheny County medical examiner identified the man as William Gibson, 49.
Police said they pulled Gibson from inside the Chevrolet Cobalt in the deep end of the pool behind a home on Carrie Ann Drive.
Police and the medical examiner are investigating the cause of the wreck and death. They are checking to see if a medical problem caused the incident.
The car apparently had been traveling up a steep hill on nearby Repp Road, caused damage across the road, then veered to the right to cross about 60 yards of grass before smashing through a privacy fence and into the pool, police said.
Three Plum police officers jumped in to get the man, police Chief Jeff Armstrong said. The three officers weren’t identified.
“One of the officers pushed his back against a wall of the pool and kicked a window to get it open. A second window was opened, too,” the chief said.
They pulled the man out and started CPR on him with medics.
Gibson was driven to Forbes Hospital in Monroeville, where he was pronounced dead.
A tow truck pulled the car out of the pool before 9 a.m.
The property owners declined to comment.
