A car was struck by a Norfolk Southern train early Wednesday in East Vandergrift but there were no reported injuries, according to a spokesman for the railroad.

The incident happened at about 2:30 a.m. when a train struck a motor vehicle at the Risher Street railroad crossing. There were no reported injuries to the Norfolk Southern train crew, said railroad spokeswoman Rachel McDonnell Bradshaw.

She said the eastbound train was on its way from Chicago to Reybold, Del.

Norfolk Southern security is assisting local police in the investigation.

East Vandergrift is routinely patrolled by Vandergrift police. No one from that department was available for comment.

“Safety of our employees and the communities we serve is our number one priority,” Bradshaw said. “Norfolk Southern advises motorists and pedestrians to stay alert around railroad tracks, and to be mindful of all warning signs and signals at railroad crossings.”
