New Kensington police say officers found a stolen handgun and drugs during a traffic stop early Friday.
Jacquet Rusher Woods, 46, of Arnold is charged with felony counts of receiving stolen property, prohibited possession of a firearm and carrying a firearm without a license. He also is charged with felony and misdemeanor drug offenses and summary traffic offenses.
Police said Woods was driving a Mercedes SUV that was pulled over about 2:45 a.m. in the 900 block of Constitution Boulevard. Woods was headed west on Seventh Street toward Constitution Boulevard when, police say, he didn’t come to a full stop at a stop sign and didn’t use his turn signal before turning onto Constitution Boulevard.
Police said they found suspected marijuana and cocaine in the vehicle, and later found five small plastic bags containing suspected cocaine in Woods’ shirt pocket. In total, police said they found 31 grams of suspected marijuana and 6.5 grams of suspected cocaine. An ounce is about 28 grams.
Woods’ driver’s license was expired and suspended for DUI, court records say.
While searching the SUV, police said in court records that officers found a .45-caliber handgun in a bag on the floor in the front passenger side of the SUV.
The gun had one round in the chamber and seven in a magazine, police said in court filings.
It was found to have been stolen from New Kensington.
No information on where or when the gun was stolen was provided. The description and serial number provided did not match any of the 24 guns stolen in the Jan. 22 burglary of RC Firearms.
So far, four of the 24 firearms taken from RC Firearms have been recovered, Ben Benson, a spokesman with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, said Friday.
When the bag was found, Woods told officers he did not know what was in it, according to court records.
A check of Woods’ criminal history found he is a felon and not allowed to possess a firearm for incidents of aggravated robbery and armed robbery in 1999 and 1998, respectively, in West Virginia and aggravated assault in Pennsylvania in 2019, New Kensington police said in court records.
Woods was arraigned Friday before New Kensington District Judge Frank J. Pallone Jr. and sent to the Westmoreland County jail on $150,000 bail. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 4.
