Man wanted in fatal double shooting in Virginia arrested in New Kensington
A 31-year-old Virginia man wanted in a fatal summer shooting there is in the Westmoreland County Prison after being tracked to a home in New Kensington where he was arrested by federal authorities.
Christopher Buckner of Manassas Park was arrested last week by the U.S. Marshal’s fugitive task force after he was found hiding in a residence in the 200 block of Freeport Road in New Kensington, according to Westmoreland Sheriff James Albert.
Manassas police said Buckner was wanted for murder, aggravated malicious wounding and two counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony in connection with a July 30 shooting at a Manassas apartment complex that killed Tommy Campbell, 49, and left a second man wounded.
Westmoreland County Sheriff’s Deputy Irvin Shipley, who also is a member of the marshal’s fugitive task force, learned Buckner was staying in New Kensington.
“I understand (Shipley) was watching the residence for three days before the federal marshals arrested him inside without incident,” Albert said.
The man injured in the Virginia shooting remains hospitalized but is expected to survive, Manassas police reported.
A hearing on Buckner’s extradition back to Virginia to face charges has not been scheduled, according to local court dockets.
Manassas is located about 30 miles southwest of Washington D.C. Albert said he was unsure of any connection between Buckner and Western Pennsylvania.
Pennsylvania court records show the Collection Service Center in New Kensington filed a case against Buckner for failing to pay local taxes in 2016. An original summary trial scheduled in 2018 was continued. District Judge Cheryl J. Peck-Yakopec has rescheduled a summary trial for Oct. 15, records show.
