A mail carrier was inside a Postal Service truck that was shoved onto its side in a crash Wednesday afternoon in Harrison.
The mailman, who was not identified, was taken to a hospital for treatment of a head injury.
Police said the mailman had just climbed back inside of the mail truck when a car traveling down Sylvan Avenue in Natrona Heights hit the rear of the truck, causing it to roll onto its side.
It came to rest atop a storm drain at the 1740 Sylvan Ave., across from the intersection with Glenmanor Street.
“I clipped the rear of the postal vehicle and it rolled onto its side,” said Tim Peck, of Harrison, who was driving the car. “I don’t know what happened.”
The small car’s bumper and other parts were strewn near the truck. It had to be towed, too.
Harrison police Sgt. Justin Bouch said the crash is under investigation.
While ambulance crews tended to the mailman and got him out of the truck, firefighters jumped into action.
Before the truck was righted, Citizens Hose and Hilltop fire crews put a sandbag-like barrier around the storm drain that was collecting gas from the truck.
Citizen Hose Fire Co. Capt. B.J. Bajack said about a dozen firefighters quickly turned the truck onto its wheels because of the leaking gasoline.
“He told us that he had just filled up the gas tank,” Bajack said.
Postal authorities didn’t return afternoon phone calls for a condition for the man.
