A dozen local teens participated in a Junior Fire Camp hosted by the Southern Allegheny Valley Emergency Services on June 22-23.

The first Junior Fire Camp hosted by the Southern Allegheny Valley Emergency Services was a hit, officials said.

A dozen local teens, 13 to 17, participated in the two-day event.

Hosted June 22-23 at the stations in Sharpsburg and Aspinwall, participants learned the ins and outs of fire safety and the role of firefighters who respond to hundreds of calls a year in the two communities.

“It was a great success,” Chief Mike Daniher said.

Currently, SAVES has two junior members, but Daniher said a goal of the fire camp was not only to raise awareness of firefighting but to recruit younger members into the fold.

During the weekend, teens learned how to handle a fire extinguisher and hose lines, viewed a vehicle rescue extraction and watched an interior search and rescue.
