Indiana Township District 1 supervisor race decided by 1 vote
The race for Indiana Township supervisor in District 1 has been decided by one vote.
Republican incumbent Paul Jorgensen will retain his seat after beating Democratic challenger Amy Giammattei by the narrowest of margins, 218 votes to 217.
The contest landed in a tie on election night, leaving the candidates to wait three weeks while Allegheny County Elections Division tallied provisional and absentee ballots.
Jorgensen was notified last week that results were certified.
“It was very good to see a lot of engagement throughout the township,” he said.
“There were a few close races, and what we saw was a lot of people participating in local government. That’s always a good thing.”
Giammattei, 64, said it’s unlikely she’ll seek election again.
“As for staying in politics, I have voiced my concerns in the past and imagine that some level of commitment will continue.
“I was hoping to be a part of a change and the election itself did that,” she said. “I learned a great deal about campaigning and had good support from our local committee. I trust there will be someone younger that can step up next time.”
In the township’s District 2 race, Republican Albert Kaan beat Democrat Nettie Owens by three votes, 211 to 208.
Jorgensen, 68, is in his 12th year on the board.
Zoning and development appeared to be key issues in the District 1 race. Jorgensen said its rural nature makes the township an enticing place to live. Giammattei said she would encourage denser residential and commercial growth in the areas where permitted.
The incumbent wasn’t all that surprised by the tight race. It’s not uncommon for small municipalities, he said.
“I’m thankful that people care about the community enough to come out and vote,” he said. “Good can always come from that.”
