Huge turnout for Aspinwall run raises $11,000 for Foxwall, Southern Allegheny emergency responders
This year’s Run for the Hill of It fundraiser in Aspinwall attracted 354 participants and raised about $11,000 to be shared with the area’s ambulance service and volunteer fire department.
The race, although only 1 mile, treks up Center Avenue — one of the 10 steepest hills in Allegheny County.
The third annual run took place April 28.
Those who finished the run first in their respective categories were treated as royalty.
Organizers said King of the Hill was Colin Martin, a Fox Chapel graduate and accomplished marathon runner. He finished first with a time of 5 minutes and 36 seconds.
Queen of the Hill was Sarah Bradley of Fox Chapel. Kid of the Hill was Sam Westbrook of Aspinwall.
Rob Tenenini, board president of Foxwall EMS, called the event a big success.
“What a great day we had on Sunday for the Run for the Hill of It,” he said. “It was awesome to see the community enjoying the post-run festivities and getting to know their local first responders. I would like to thank all of the sponsors for making this happen, all of the participants for coming out and climbing the hill, and all of the first responders for everything they do on a daily basis. We look forward to seeing everyone again in 2025.”
Proceeds benefit Foxwall and Southern Allegheny Volunteer Emergency Services.
Foxwall is the primary responder for Fox Chapel and Aspinwall. Situated at 749 Hemlock Hollow Road in Fox Chapel, the group answered 1,500 calls last year.
Southern Allegheny Valley Emergency Services, formed in June after the merger of the Aspinwall and Sharpsburg fire departments, responded to more than 600 calls last year.
SAVES Fire Chief Mike Daniher said the event would not be a big success without a lot of support.
“(We) would like to thank all the volunteers that put the event on and all the participants that ran or walked helping to raise funds for both fire and EMS. The Southern Allegheny Valley emergency services was happy to be a part of it,” Daniher said.
There were a variety of post-run activities at Firemen’s Park such as an inflatable obstacle course, a face painter and a balloon artist, as well as food vendors including ice cream, a doughnut truck and a coffee truck.
“This annual run truly enriches the Aspinwall community,” Foxwall EMS Chief Gino Mollica said. “Over the years, Run for the Hill of It has been instrumental in generating vital funds for Foxwall EMS and SAVES. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the community for their unwavering support. It is truly invaluable.”
