Members of Highlands High School National Honor Society braved the rain on Saturday to collect presents for the U.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots program.

The group, led by teachers Mindy Eckenrod and Jordan Murdock, were scheduled to be part of the Harrison Recreation Committee Holiday Parade and persevered despite the parade being canceled on account of a forecast of rain and high winds.

Students stationed a yellow school bus along Broadview Boulevard and collected mounds of toys to be donated to needy children.

Teens collected gifts from passing motorists while other drivers honked in support of their efforts.

Special fundraisers throughout the week, combined with Saturday’s efforts, brought in more than $500. That allowed the kids to buy additional gifts from the Big Lots store in the neaby Heights Plaza Shopping Center.

Eckenrod said the holiday volunteerism has been a staple for National Honor Society at Highlands for nearly a decade.
