A Highlands Middle School student has tested positive for covid-19, according to an email from Principal Kimberly Price.

The school was notified of the case on Tuesday, Price wrote. The student is on the middle school soccer team.

District Superintendent Monique Mawhinney, district spokeswoman Jennifer Goldberg and school board President Bobbie Neese did not immediately respond to emails for comment.

In her email, Price said all members of the soccer team are being counted as being in close contact with the student. They are being advised to quarantine for 14 days from the date of exposure. The date of exposure was not stated, but Price said students will return on Oct. 1.

While quarantined, students will participate in their classes remotely.

“Teachers are aware of this and will ensure that students have access to learning virtually,” Price wrote.

Parents with any concerns about their children’s health were advised to contact their doctors.

“Our school nurse will check in with you twice during the quarantine to see how your child is faring physically,” Price wrote. “Please contact us if your child develops symptoms so that we are aware and can do further contact tracing if needed.”
