Wilkinsburg School District
Cathleen Cubelic

Highlands School District has a new assistant superintendent.

The school board hired Cathleen Cubelic, who has been an assistant superintendent in the Wilkinsburg School District since May 2017.

She was hired with a starting salary of $126,000 under a three-year agreement.

When she will start at Highlands is not yet known. Her start date is pending the execution of a formal employment contract and its review by the district’s solicitor.

Cubelic, 52, of Shaler could not be reached for comment.

Before Wilkinsburg, Cubelic was a curriculum director at the Midwestern Intermediate Unit in Grove City. When hired by Wilkinsburg, she had 18 years of experience as a principal, assistant principal and teacher.

Cubelic replaces Monique Mawhinney as assistant superintendent. Mawhinney started as assistant superintendent in April 2018, and became the district’s superintendent April 1.

Before Mawhinney, Highlands had not had an assistant superintendent since 2015. For most of her first year, Mawhinney also was the district’s substitute superintendent in place of former Superintendent Michael Bjalobok, who was on medical leave before retiring.

Mawhinney and Cubelic previously served as administrators in Hampton Township School District, where their tenures overlapped.

Before Highlands, Mawhinney was director of pupil services at Hampton for 17 years. Cubelic’s tenure there included serving as principal of Central Elementary School.
