Ramps on the Highland Park Bridge that are used to access Sharpsburg and Aspinwall closed Tuesday for a long-term project.

Motorists who use the Highland Park Bridge ramps to connect to Sharpsburg and Aspinwall will need to allow extra time after the ramps were closed Tuesday for a long-term project.

Northbound and southbound off-ramps from Route 28 to Freeport Road are scheduled to be closed through May, PennDOT announced.

Crews will work around the clock on drainage improvements, bridge rehab and reconstruction.

Motorists still will be able to use the ramps to get onto the bridge.

A suggested detour traveling south is to use the Fox Chapel Road exit and then turn onto Fox Chapel Road and then onto Freeport Road.

Going north, drivers can use the ramp to North 8 toward Butler and then turn left onto Kittanning Street, onto Butler and Bridge streets and then turn left to North Main Street.

In Sharpsburg, there is a simultaneous long-term closure on part of Main Street that motorists will need to navigate. Crews are working to install sanitary and stormwater sewer lines between Sixth and Eighth streets.

Work is part of a $3.8 million improvement project through which crews will work to reduce combined sewer overflows.

That project is expected to last through March.

Trucks are advised to cross the Highland Park Bridge to North Route 8 toward Butler Street, then to the 62nd Street Bridge and the ramp back toward Sharpsburg.

Eastbound truck drivers who use Main Street should be aware that it is difficult to turn around if their vehicle goes beyond 23rd Street in Sharpsburg.

Motorists can check on the status of the ramp work at 511pa.com.
