Harrison woman tells police man was trying to kill her with corkscrew, box cutter
Police officers say they found blood throughout a Harrison apartment where a woman said a man was trying to kill her Monday night.
Officers heard a woman crying and screaming when they arrived at the apartment in the 1200 block of Argonne Drive shortly after 8 p.m., according to a criminal complaint.
Police found Garland Woods, 41, of Wilkinsburg on the back porch. He had blood on his body and scratches on his face, chest and arms, the complaint states.
The woman, found upstairs, was badly injured. She had suffered cuts to her hands, with her pinky fingers deeply cut open, according to the complaint. She also had multiple scratches to her head, neck, face and back, police said.
The woman said Woods stabbed her with a corkscrew wine bottle opener multiple times and cut her hands with a box cutter while she tried to defend herself, the complaint states.
Police reported recovering a box cutter and corkscrew in the apartment.
The woman said Woods punched her several times in the face, strangled her to the point she could not breathe and told her he was going to kill her, according to the complaint. She said Garland put his foot on her neck while she was on the ground, police said.
The woman said she tried to fight back, but Garland overpowered her. She said she thought she was going to die, according to the complaint.
A 4-month-old child was found on a bed in a bedroom, with blood on its shirt from the woman’s injuries but was unharmed, the complaint states.
The woman and child were taken to Allegheny Valley Hospital in Harrison.
Police said Woods, who was on probation, had multiple warrants out for his arrest.
He did not have an attorney listed in court records.
Woods is charged with a felony count of aggravated assault; misdemeanor counts of simple assault, strangulation and terroristic threats; and a summary count of harassment.
A judge denied bond when Woods was arraigned Tuesday morning, and he was sent to Allegheny County Jail. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 12.
