Northbound Freeport Road under the New Kensington Bridge in East Deer has reopened to traffic, PennDOT announced Friday.

The single lane traveling under the bridge closed July 17 to allow crews to work on the bridge.

While the underpass was closed, traffic flow was reconfigured to have vehicles heading toward Tarentum proceed to the light at the bridge, where traffic normally is required to turn right to cross the bridge.

The bridge itself closed to traffic July 24 for work and reopened Sept. 1.

The work is part of a $24.6 million preservation project that started in March on the bridge, spanning the Allegheny River between East Deer and New Kensington. It includes structural steel and concrete substructure repairs, a full painting of the existing superstructure, latex overlay, expansion dam replacement, and new light poles and luminaries.

The project is scheduled to be finished in the fall of 2024.
