Freeport Fire-EMS will soon have a new EMS chief — the first in the department’s history.
Jamison Hughes is set to take on the role in October.
Currently a paramedic in Monroeville, Hughes, 48, said he’s worked in emergency services for 30 years. The Indiana County resident is hoping to hit the ground running next month.
“I’m very excited,” he said. “We’re beginning the transition process now.”
Hughes said much of his work will be administrative, managing around 15 paramedics, but he said he might still operate in the field occasionally.
Ryan Sweeny, a member of the department’s board of directors, said Freeport Fire-EMS created the chief position to offer a steady hand for administrative tasks and day-to-day operations.
He said Hughes “brought a lot to the table” with his previous experience and training.
The new chief holds an associate degree in emergency medicine services from Galveston College in Texas, and he’s credentialed by the National EMS Management Association as a supervising paramedic officer.
