A Highlands-area glam squad is converging to help students prep for prom on Friday — for free.
With hashtags like #GetYourPrettyOn and #FeelHandsomeFriday, volunteers from the Highlands Partnership Network have plastered social media to seek teens who need a little assistance getting red-carpet ready.
“I want to make sure that the community knows there are people out there who will help them,” said project coordinator Jaadyn Hughes, 22.
“I want them to feel the love.”
Hughes’ crew will set up from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday at Natrona Heights Presbyterian Church, 1428 Broadview Blvd., where the gym will double as a makeshift salon.
There will be hair stylists, barbers, makeup artists and nail technicians, said Hughes, a 2019 Highlands graduate.
“I remember going to prom. I had a job so I didn’t ask my parents for money, but there are a lot of people in our community who don’t have dress shoes and don’t know if they can get money to get their hair done,” Hughes said.
“Knowing that there’s a big event coming up like this, we don’t want our community to lack the ability to go because of these things.”
Highlands prom is themed “Dancing Under the Stars” and will be from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Syria Shrine Center in Harmar.
This is the first year the Highlands Partnership Network is offering the free prom prep. It is an outreach of the group’s after-school program, The Spot, which offers teens from sixth to 12th grades a safe space to learn skills and connect with community.
Network coordinator Misty Chybrzynski Woody said the “Get Ready With Us” event is a way to enjoy preparing for the big dance “with some really talented people who are so kind to offer their skills and services to our kids.
“We hope all the students can feel and look their best and not have to worry about the challenge of cost.”
Chybrzynski Woody said there will be a photo staging area for the made-up teens to strut their stuff.
Anyone who would like to reserve an appointment should call Hughes at 412-737-8589 by 6 p.m. Thursday.
She said the group will do its best to accommodate walk-ins.
“We want them to feel good and feel like they can count on somebody,” Hughes said.
