Frazer Sgt. Aaron Scott remains head of police department, though official title may be a while in coming
Frazer police Sgt. Aaron Scott continues to run the township’s police department three months after Chief Terry Kuhns died.
It’s unclear whether he will take the role officially — and Scott is fine with that.
“The officers that we have assist me greatly in making sure the day-to-day operations are running smoothly,” he said.
“I understand that this position may be temporary or it may be permanent. I fully support our supervisors with whatever route they decide to go with.”
Supervisors swiftly named Scott as officer in charge at the first meeting following Kuhns’ death in April.
Lori Ziencik, township supervisor and secretary, said the board is in no hurry to make further changes.
“Losing the chief was a tough one,” Ziencik said. “Things are running very smoothly, and the police department is pulling together — all doing a good job.”
Scott has been a sergeant in Frazer for about five years. He was hired in 2010, shortly after the township’s police force was formed in conjunction with the opening of the Pittsburgh Mills shopping complex.
“He worked part time for many years before going full time in 2018,” Ziencik said.
Ziencik said the township has received no inquiries from people interested in the chief’s position, but that’s because “we haven’t asked.”
The township has five full-time officers and one part-time officer, Scott said.
Kuhns was the township’s police chief since 2013. At one point, he and Scott were the sole full-timers patrolling.
“He was helping to do a lot of paperwork under the chief before, and he definitely would be considered when we start to talk about it,” Ziencik said.
Scott said adjustments are never easy, but the transition to department head was made easier because of his bond with Kuhns.
“Chief Kuhns and I worked together for 11 years, and it has been an easier transition thanks to all the knowledge that he shared with me during that time,” Scott said.
