Fox Chapel Area School District resource officers and local first responders are gearing up for the annual Community Safety, Health & Wellness Event in Aspinwall.

The celebration features a bike rodeo with police, car seat checks, wellness screenings, numerous vendors, a touch-a-truck area, free bike helmets for children and other giveaways.

It is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 11 at the Aspinwall municipal parking lot along Commercial Avenue. Admission is free and no registration is required.

District police Chief Joe Kozarian said the event is a great way for community members to meet school resource officers, who work closely with students and first responders, as well as emphasize the importance of health and wellness.

“This event brings our school community together in a fun environment. Additionally, it enables all of us to celebrate the common goals of safety, health and wellness,” Kozarian says. “It is also a way to say thank you, on behalf of our school resource officers, for the amazing support they receive from the students and their parents and guardians.”

The event is sponsored by the district and its resource officers in conjunction with the district’s municipalities — Aspinwall, Blawnox, Fox Chapel, Sharpsburg and the townships of O’Hara and Indiana — and their police, fire and EMS departments.

Aspinwall police Chief David Nemec and Assistant Chief Mike Vith raffled off prizes last year, including Nerf balls, Disney princesses and several children’s bikes.

Nemec said his officers are looking forward to continuing that tradition.

Borough Manager Melissa Lang O’Malley said everyone is excited for the safety day’s return.

“We were honored to have the event in Aspinwall again this year. We enjoy working with the school district and local communities to make this event special,” O’Malley said.

Shuttle service will be provided throughout the district from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Shuttles will run about every 30 minutes.

Shuttle stops include:

• Aspinwall Volunteer Fire Department at 12th Street and Center Avenue to Kerr Elementary School to 13th and Canal streets in Sharpsburg to Sixth and Canal streets to the event.

• Dorseyville Middle School to Fairview Elementary School to Central Avenue and Riverwatch Drive in O’Hara to Freeport Road and North Avenue in Blawnox to the event.

The event may be moved to May 18 if there is inclement weather.
