No one was hurt in a fire that broke out in the upstairs apartment of a New Kensington home Tuesday night, fire Chief Ed Saliba Jr. said.

The fire, in a building on an alley paralleling the 800 block of Seventh Street, was reported around 10:30 p.m.

The fire was contained to a mattress in an attic bedroom, Saliba said. The cause was not known, but Saliba said it appeared to have been accidental.

Despite considerable smoke and some heat and water damage, Saliba described the damage as minimal and said the apartment can be repaired. Firefighters did not use much water putting it out.

Saliba said two adults and a child live in the upstairs apartment. The Red Cross was called to help them.

One person lives in the downstairs apartment, which he said was not damaged.

Firefighters were at the scene for 45 minutes to an hour, Saliba said. Departments from Arnold, Lower Burrell and Tarentum also responded.

No firefighters were hurt, Saliba said.
