Leechburg man killed in Route 66 motorcycle crash
The Armstrong County coroner said a Leechburg man was killed Friday morning when he lost control of his motorcycle along Route 66 in Gilpin.
Coroner Brian K. Myers identified the victim as 55-year-old Ronald M. Mego.
Myers said Mego was traveling north toward Leechburg just before 6:30 a.m.when he lost control of the motorcycle and went through a yard and into a utility pole and fire hydrant. Mego was thrown approximately 30 feet by the impact, according to Myers. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
No other vehicles were involved.
Route 66 was closed in both directions until about 9 a.m. between Airport Road in Gilpin and Grant Street in Leechburg while officials investigated.
Myers said speed is believed to be a factor in the crash. He ruled the cause of death to be blunt force trauma. The coroner’s office and state police are investigating.
No further information was immediately available.
