East Deer resident among 3 named as civil service commissioners for regional police force
East Deer is now represented on the Allegheny Valley Regional Police Department’s civil service commission.
District Judge Michael Girardi on Wednesday gave the oath of office to Joe Ferrero of Cheswick, Erin Auvil of Springdale Township and John Nwranski of East Deer for terms on the commission.
The main responsibility for civil service commissioners is to administer written exams to applicants for positions within the police department, said Pam Manning, secretary and treasurer for the Allegheny Valley Regional Police Department, which serves all three communities.
The civil service commission also provides the background information on prospective officers to the Allegheny Valley Regional Police Commission, which is responsible for the operations, management and administration of the department.
It’s unclear how long the terms will be since the department is a regional force. Manning said department officials will look into the matter with the state Department of Community and Economic Development.
In 2019, Springdale Township and Cheswick’s police departments merged to form the Allegheny Valley Regional Police Department. East Deer joined in 2022.
“The civil service board now has representatives from each municipality from Allegheny Valley Regional,” Manning said. “They bring their community experience to the board.”
