Dollar General could open store along Route 908 in Fawn

People who live near the Route 908 corridor in Fawn will have a new store to shop for groceries, hardware and pharmacy items.

A Dollar General is expected to be built at the intersection of the state road and Saxonburg Boulevard, across from Leisure Pools and Spas by Ronda.

“This is for the residents. When they need something, it will be there for them,” said Pam Ponsart, township secretary/treasurer.

“It’ll be like the corner stores that we had years ago.”

Supervisors have approved a subdivision plan, but Dollar General representatives still need to present a land development plan. They are expected to go before the township’s planning commission by April.

“If they go over everything and recommend it to council, it will definitely start later this year,” Ponsart said.

None of the township supervisors could immediately be reached for comment.

A corporate public relations specialist from Dollar General said in an email that the company is “always looking for opportunities to grow in a number of different communities around the country.”

The company spokesperson added: “We are currently in our due diligence phase. This means we are reviewing the opportunity to add a new store in Allegheny County, but we have not committed to doing so just yet.”

Headquartered in Goodlettsville, Tenn., Dollar General has more than 18,000 stores in 47 states, according to its website. In the December announcement of Dollar General’s third-quarter 2022 results, Chief Executive Officer Jeff Owen said the company plans to execute about 3,170 real estate projects in the U.S. in its 2023 fiscal year, including about 1,050 new stores.

Ponsart said residents along Ekastown Road and farther along Route 908 might enjoy the convenience of a quick stop for snacks, gifts, housewares, pet food and cough medicine. She said it will be a medium-sized store.

“They have a little bit of everything,” she said.

“That’s a very busy intersection, and I think it will see a lot of business.”

The property was formerly home to a gas station and more recently served as a slate and stone business.

There are three nearby Dollar General stores: one along South Pike Road in Buffalo Township, another along Broadview Boulevard in Harrison and one on High Street in Freeport.
