Aspinwall residents and property owners have some more time to schedule a water line check with the borough.

The state Department of Environmental Protection is requiring communities to inventory their water lines.

To comply, Aspinwall’s public works crews are looking to see what pipe is coming from a house to the water meters.

The inventory project began in June in Aspinwall, and the borough expected to conclude it at the end of September.

Borough Manager Melissa Lang O’Malley said Monday the deadline is now Oct. 16, which according to the state is the deadline for communities to submit their inventories.

“EPA’s Lead and Copper Rule, published in January 2021, requires community water systems, like Aspinwall Borough, to submit a service line inventory to DEP by Oct. 16,” said Lauren Camarda, spokewoman for the DEP.

“Neither the EPA nor DEP require homeowners to submit anything. The requirements rest with the public water system … to verify service line material,” Carmarda said.

There are about 1,200 properties in the borough, and about 75% of them have been inventoried, O’Malley said.

“We’re confident that we’ll be able to complete it by the due date,” she said Monday afternoon.

Residents and property owners are to schedule an appointment for an inspection by calling the borough office at 412-781-0213.

Appointments are at no cost to the resident or property owner.

Appointment times generally are from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays.

However, people can schedule appointments from 2 to 7 p.m. Sept. 19 only.
