Lots of traffic and extra police are anticipated Saturday afternoon in Lower Burrell.

Hundreds of people are expected to attend a celebration of life for David “Mogie” Magill, a popular Alle-Kiski Valley restaurant owner who was shot and killed two weeks ago.

City Councilman Chris Fabry said there won’t be road closures, but the city will have crossing guards along the route to help with traffic control. There also will be extra officers on duty to assist.

“Saturday is exactly what it’s titled — it’s a celebration of life for David Magill,” said Ron Balla, a friend of Magill.

Magill was shot and killed Dec. 21 outside his restaurant, Mogie’s Irish Pub in Lower Burrell.

The investigation is ongoing, said Lower Burrell police Chief John Marhefka. According to his arrest papers, suspect Nathan Salem drove to Lower Burrell City Hall right after slaying Magill and turned himself in. Police haven’t released a motive for the shooting.

Salem faces a preliminary hearing Feb. 14 before District Judge Cheryl Peck Yakopec.

The event to honor Magill will take place from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 92, 1601 Wildlife Lodge Road.

Organizers anticipate a large turnout. They encourage those attending to park at nearby Bon Air Elementary School. Once that lot is full, the public is encouraged to park at Burrell High School, where people will be shuttled to and from the VFW.

Guest speakers will include family members, friends and members of the Alle-Kiski Valley Back the Blue and Officer Brian Shaw Foundation, two organizations Magill supported. Carnival of Souls, an Irish folk band, will perform.

Fundraisers have been established for restaurant employees who currently are not working. From 4 to 11 p.m. Jan. 10, Ash Taphouse in New Kensington will donate all tips and a portion of sales from its Irish Specials menu. There also will be donation boxes set up Saturday for Magill’s family.

Balla said a celebration of life is what Magill would have wanted.

“It’s an opportunity for people to pay respects and celebrate his life,” Balla said.
