The Tarentum Bridge from New Kensington to Tarentum is expected to reopen at 6 a.m. Monday, PennDOT announced Friday.

That side of the bridge over the Allegheny River was scheduled to reopen by midnight Sunday. The reopening was delayed after a car crashed in the work zone last Saturday and damaged equipment.

Crews had been slightly ahead of schedule before the crash, PennDOT spokesman Steve Cowan said.

In a news release, PennDOT said the contractor has been working to make up for the lost time and reopen the bridge as close as possible to the original expected date.

“The contractor is still hoping to have the work completed and the bridge reopened on Sunday night, but they do have until Monday morning,” Cowan said. “We wanted to make sure that motorists were aware of the extension so they weren’t caught off guard on Monday morning.”

The Tarentum Bridge was closed to all traffic June 9 as part of a $3.2 million rehabilitation of the bridge, sending drivers into an often-congested detour route using the New Kensington Bridge.

The lanes of the Tarentum Bridge from Tarentum to New Kensington reopened as scheduled on June 13.

Tarentum police Chief William Vakulick said no charges have been filed yet against the 39-year-old Lower Burrell woman who was driving the car involved in the crash, but charges will be coming.

Vakulick said the woman, who was alone in her car, drove through a barrier at the New Kensington end of the bridge and crashed into equipment. Her car bounced off barriers until coming to rest against a paving machine, where it burst into flames.

Officers found the woman walking near Nick Chevrolet on West Seventh Avenue, and she was showing signs of intoxication, Vakulick said. She was not seriously hurt.

Work on the bridge is expected to be finished in the fall.
