A construction crew will soon be pouring concrete for the deck for the Logans Ferry Road bridge on the side heading toward New Kensington.
Soon after, a crew from Plum Contracting will prepare to build the lanes in the other direction. That will happen starting next month, according to Plum Contracting Superintendent Ray Ott.
The Greensburg-based contractor is installing the new $1.9 million bridge under a contract with PennDOT.
The crew will remove the existing concrete and steel and rebuild the span. The bridge project includes guardrail upgrades, sidewalk and barrier repairs and pavement marking work.
The bridge is just outside New Kensington and Greensburg Road; it crosses Puckety Creek at the Lower Burrell-Plum line. Logans Ferry Road provides ready access between New Kensington into Plum and Oakmont.
PennDOT spokesman Steve Cowan said the previous Logans Ferry Road bridge was built in 1949. The new bridge will be 71 feet long and wider than the one it is replacing.
Since mid-June, traffic has been reduced to a single, alternating lane. Traffic continues to be controlled by lights installed at both ends of the span.
The project is expected to be finished by early November, according to PennDOT.
