Candidates battle for Allegheny Valley School Board race

Seven people — including five incumbents — sought ballot spots for five seats on the Allegheny Valley School Board. One incumbent, Colleen Crumb, lost.

With 100% of the Democratic vote in, Amy Sarno led with 18.10% of the vote, Paula Jean Moretti had 17.47%, Nicole Paulovich had 15.84%, Glenna Renaldi had 15.13% and Kathleen “Jeanne” Haas had 13.35%, earning the Democratic nominations for the November election. Colleen Crumb had 11.19% and James Schiemer had 8.17%. Paulovich was the only newcomer to win a Democratic nomination.

On the Republican ballot, with 100% of the vote in, Moretti led with 15.72%, Paulovich had 15.29%, Haas had 15.18%, Sarno had 14.33%, and Schiemer had 13.06%, rounding out the top five for the Republican nominations come November. Renaldi had 12.17% and Crumb had 11.75%, appearing that Crumb would miss the ballot for the four-year term this fall.

Those seats are for four-year terms. No candidates were on the ballot for the sixth seat, which carries a two-year term, leaving it open for write-ins.

Crumb, 51, of Springdale was appointed to the board in December. She is a registered Republican, and works as a paralegal at a law firm in Downtown Pittsburgh.

Haas, 78, of Springdale Township has served on the board for 12 years. Haas is a registered Republican and is a school bus driver for W.L. Roenigk.

Moretti, 66, of Springdale was first elected to the board in 2019. She is a registered Democrat and was employed as a secretary in the district for 30 years.

Paulovich, 43, of Springdale is a registered Democrat and seeking elected office for the first time. She works for an early childhood advocacy agency named Trying Together.

Renaldi, 72, of Springdale has been on the board for a total of 24 years. Renaldi is a registered Democrat and a retired x-ray technician. She lost her seat in 2019, but was appointed to the board in 2021.

Sarno, 39, of Springdale was appointed to the board in November. She is a registered Democrat and teaches middle school language arts for Pennsylvania Leadership Charter School.

James Schiemer, of Springdale is a registered Republican.

The Allegheny Valley School District includes Cheswick, Harmar, Springdale and Springdale Township.
