A Butler man who was the shooter in an incident in Butler nearly 3½ years ago that led to discovery of a large amount of heroin and fentanyl in his car has been sentenced to 15 years in federal prison.

Darnell Wynn, 44, was found guilty of possession with intent to distribute 100 grams or more of a mixture containing heroin and 10 grams or more of a substance containing fluorofentanyl and fentanyl, federal officials announced Friday.

In addition, he was convicted of possessing a gun used in drug trafficking.

Authorities said police identified Wynn as the shooter in an incident along Mitchell Avenue in Butler on Feb. 15, 2021. Police responded to multiple reports of shots fired.

Wynn’s wallet and car keys were seized while officers executed a search warrant at his home.

A subsequent search of his car resulted in the seizure of a handgun loaded with 24 rounds of ammunition, additional ammunition, pistol magazines, about 170 grams of heroin and about 39 grams of fentanyl.

Lab tests later confirmed bullet casings recovered from the shooting scene had been fired by the gun, authorities said.

U.S. District Judge Christy Criswell Weigand imposed the sentence on Wynn.
