Concrete barriers at the entrance door are among new security measures the owners of RC Firearms in New Kensington are taking after a burglary Jan. 22.

A New Kensington gun store burglarized last week will reopen Saturday with enhanced security measures.

Roy Berg, who runs RC Firearms on Freeport Street with his son, Cole, said they will be having a “big sale” to mark the reopening along with a somewhat early celebration of their first year in business.

The Jan. 22 burglary, in which someone used a pickup as a battering ram to force their way into the shop the Bergs opened Feb. 11, was not something they ever expected in their first year, Roy Berg said Monday.

Most of the repairs to the shop have been completed, including placing concrete barriers outside the entrance and replacing two glass entry doors with solid steel doors, Berg said.

They also are adding more cameras and sensors.

“We’re upgrading everything to avoid this from happening again,” Berg said.

Twenty-two or 23 handguns and two long guns were taken from the store, according to the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. One handgun, a Taurus 9 mm, was recovered Wednesday when four men were arrested in Homestead.

Police have not said if any of the four were involved in the burglary.

Keyauje Walker-Harris, 20, of New Kensington was carrying the loaded gun taken from RC Firearms when police stopped the vehicle in which he was a passenger. The three others arrested after a traffic stop also were illegally carrying loaded handguns, police said in court filings.

Walker-Harris; the driver, William Byrd, 19, of Pittsburgh; and another passenger, James Eason, 20, of New Kensington each were charged with carrying a firearm without a license. Walker-Harris faces an additional charge of receiving stolen property.

All three were released on nonmonetary bonds and have preliminary hearings scheduled for Feb. 14.

The fourth, Tevian Williams, 21, of Pittsburgh, faces an additional charge, as he is not allowed to possess a firearm because of his criminal history. He also was charged with drug possession.

Williams was arraigned Friday and sent to Allegheny County Jail after being unable to post a $20,000 bail. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Feb. 7.

An ATF spokesman did not respond to a request for comment Monday on the status of the investigation or whether any other guns have been recovered.

RC Firearms has inventory available to sell despite the burglary, for which Berg said they were insured. The sale will focus on ammunition and select firearms.

If the stolen weapons are recovered, RC Firearms will never get them back, he said.
