Brackenridge names officer-in-charge; Steele releases $75k in state money for police department
As a crowd gathered blocks from the Brackenridge municipal office Thursday to honor slain police Chief Justin McIntire, council met briefly to name an officer-in-charge of the small department.
Members appointed Sgt. Mike Duffy to head the three-member force. Duffy did not attend the meeting.
It was not clear when council would name a new chief.
Council deferred public comment in order to keep the meeting brief and allow time for those attending to get to the nearby vigil.
“I’m thankful for all the police that have stepped up to help us,” said Councilman Dino Lopreiato. “I’m heartbroken though, and I wish they didn’t have to be here.”
Police from various departments have been volunteering time to cover shifts and provide patrols.
Mayor Lindsay Fraser said that state police will cover all shifts Wednesday for Brackenridge, Harrison and Tarentum so that officers from the three departments can attend McIntire’s funeral.
“I thank the multiple departments — too many to list,” said Councilman John Stanzione. “These are guys we know and see every day that put their lives on the line for us.”
Steele brings $75k for police
Newly elected 33rd Legislative District Representative Mandy Steele attended the meeting with a gift for the borough — $75,000 in state money designated for the police department.
Steele said she fought for the secured funding because it is what the borough needs in the face of an incredible loss.
The former Fox Chapel councilwoman said she knows firsthand the unforeseen expenses incurred by local governments and wants to support the borough.
Mayor Fraser said the donation amounts to nearly 15% of the $490,000 police budget.
“It’s huge,” Fraser said. “That level of support makes a big difference.”
