Portions of Harmar, Indiana Township, Fox Chapel and O’Hara are without water after two major line breaks late Wednesday.

Residents in impacted areas should boil water as a precaution, according to the Fox Chapel Authority.

As a result, Fairview Elementary School in the Fox Chapel Area School District is closed Thursday.

The district said it was notified of a boil water advisory after 7 a.m. and closed the building. Other schools are open.

Crews are working to repair the breaks.

The Fox Chapel Authority serves about 5,500 customers across 15 square miles.

The water line breaks caused low or no water pressure for large sections of the coverage area.

A boil alert is necessary because a decrease in pressure can allow contaminants to enter drinking water. Testing is being done to confirm adequate disinfectant levels and verify that the water is safe.
