Members of the Southern Allegheny Valley Emergency Services participate in regular training sessions such as this one held Feb. 27.

Blawnox Volunteer Fire Company is getting a new computer for its engine to aid with dispatch and pinpoint hydrant locations.

Chief Jeff Stephens said some of his members also will receive upgraded bunker gear, fittings and adapters, all of which will boost protection at fire scenes.

Purchases were assisted by a grant through the Office of the State Fire Commissioner.

Blawnox is among Lower Valley departments that were awarded “vital funding” from the Fire Company and Medical Services Grant Program.

The department is scheduled to get about $15,000.

“This grant helps take a little pressure off of the fundraising we have to do, like our upcoming fish fry on Good Friday,” Stephens said.

“We are extremely grateful for all the support we get.”

The Blawnox department responds to nearly 450 calls a year. It is certified as a Quick Response Service and also is a Level 2A Swiftwater Team, the first in the state to reach that level of recognition.

It joins Southern Allegheny Valley Emergency Services in receiving money in this round of state funding.

Chief Mike Daniher said his group, which serves Sharpsburg and Aspinwall, is scheduled to get about $29,350.

Money will be used to buy new gas meters, thermal imaging cameras and rescue tools, he said.

The department, formed in June after the merger of Aspinwall and Sharpsburg departments, responded to more than 600 calls last year.

“That wears out equipment,” Daniher said.

Both fire companies had been in service for more than 100 years before consolidating.

“We are appreciative of these funds to replace worn-out equipment with the latest technology,” Daniher said.

State Rep. Mandy Steele, D-Fox Chapel, said the grants ensure emergency responders will have the resources needed.

“These funds are especially important, considering there is a shortage of firefighters and EMS providers,” Steele said.
