Blawnox residents can volunteer to help keep the borough clean through a new Adopt-A-Block program.

Blawnox is launching a new beautification program in the weeks leading up to Earth Day.

Adopt-A-Block is a volunteer initiative designed to rid the streets of litter and other debris.

Spearheaded by residents Casey Cunningham and Leah Krenn, it is a simple way to show community pride, the duo said.

“The beauty of the program is, if we all pitch in a little bit we can collectively make a big impact,” Krenn said.

The Adopt-A-Block initiative is part of the larger efforts by the new Best of Blawnox nonprofit, formed in January to boost community engagement. From shoveling walkways to tending to a public garden, the fledgling group is working to showcase the borough through good deeds, organizer Diane Casile said.

The group’s first effort, Snow Angels, connected elderly residents and those with disabilities with nearby neighbors who helped them shovel snow from walkways and driveways.

Krenn said she is looking forward to making volunteerism a family activity, something she can do with her husband and two young daughters.

Anyone interested in the Adopt-A-Block program will be assigned a neighborhood street to clean regularly over the course of the next year.

Krenn said the best part is the ability to make a contribution when it is convenient.

“Adopt-A-Block is a great way for residents to safely engage and explore the borough while keeping Blawnox beautiful year-round,” Cunningham said.

“For my family, and all Blawnox residents and business owners, this is an opportunity to remind ourselves that Blawnox is not just a place where we live, but a community that we care for.”
