Arnold father and son subdue, tie up would-be robber in their home, police say

An alleged armed robbery attempt in Arnold didn’t turn out so well for the suspect.

According to police, a father and son subdued a man they say pulled a gun in their home while trying to rob the son.

The accused robber, Raiquan Shakeem Banks, 19, of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, was bruised, cut and bound with electrical cords by the time police arrived at the Fourth Avenue home Sunday morning, according to the criminal complaint.

Arnold police say they received a report of a home invasion along Fourth Avenue early Sunday and went to the residence with New Kensington and Lower Burrell officers.

The son came outside when Arnold police knocked on the door and told police the would-be robber was inside, according to the complaint.

Officers said they saw the suspect, identified as Banks, tied up with electrical cords. The father was holding Banks down on the floor.

Banks was arrested, and he told police the incident was a drug deal gone bad, the complaint said. A handgun police were told was used in the robbery was found on the floor.

Banks was in poor condition after the incident and was taken to Allegheny Valley Hospital in Harrison for treatment. He suffered several large bruises and cuts to his head and ears, according to the complaint.

The son told police he made arrangements for Banks and another man to come to the home. After he took them to a bedroom, Banks allegedly pulled out a handgun and tried to rob the son, the complaint said.

The son told police he and Banks fought for control of the gun, which fired once. Police were able to locate the round, which went through a dryer and hit a wall before landing on the floor.

When the son called for help, the complaint said, his father ran downstairs. There, police say, the father tried to use his own gun to shoot at the second man in the house, but the gun failed to fire. Police say the second man fled, and the father and son then overpowered Banks.

A woman was seen circling the block where the home is located in a silver or gray Oldsmobile, police say. That woman is believed to have been involved with Banks and the other suspect, according to police.

Banks faces felony charges of robbery and carrying a gun without a license and misdemeanor reckless endangerment charges. He was denied bail and remained in Westmore­land County Prison on Tuesday.

Banks is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing before District Judge Frank J. Pallone Jr. at 10:30 a.m. Feb. 21.
