A 73-year-old man died Wednesday evening after a crash in Upper Burrell.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the man as Joseph Demichele of Penn Township.

The two-vehicle crash on Milligantown Road, between Stoney Hill Road and Rustic Lane, was reported just before 5:15 p.m.

According to Upper Burrell Police Chief Kenneth Pate, Demichele was driving an SUV that collided head-on with a car driven by a 33-year-old Parks Township woman.

Pate said officers found Demichele unresponsive at the scene. He was taken to Allegheny Valley Hospital in Harrison, where he was pronounced dead.

The woman suffered a minor ankle injury and was taken to a hospital by ambulance.

The cause of the crash is not yet known. The road was closed for nearly five hours while a state police reconstruction team investigated and the vehicles were towed away, Pate said.

There were no witnesses to the crash.

“As to what exactly happened, we’re not quite sure yet,” Pate said. “That will take some time to figure out.”
